Description
Acid Yellow 3 is a colorant whose chemical name is 1H-Indene-1,3(2H)-dione, 2-(2-quinolinyl)-, sulfonated, sodium salts (CI 47005). Its chemical description defines it as a mixture of the sodium salts of the mono- and disulfonic acids of 2-(2-quinolyl)-1H-indene-1,3(2H)-dione, principally disulfonated. The same description states that, to identify the disulfonated colorant allowed in the European Union, the INCI name CI 47005 must be used, except in hair dye products. Its declared technical function is hair dyeing, which groups ingredients intended to give color to the hair.
The substance is listed in Annex III of Regulation (EC) No 1223/2009, the annex of substances restricted subject to conditions, under reference 326. The permitted product type is "Non-oxidative hair dye products", with a maximum concentration of "0,5 %". The conditions of the entry read verbatim: "From 1 July 2023 non-oxidative hair dye products containing that substance and not complying with the restrictions shall not be placed on the Union market. From 1 January 2024 non-oxidative hair dye products containing that substance and not complying with the restrictions shall not be made available on the Union market. The Annex IV entry to which that text refers corresponds to CI 47005, whose warnings field contains "Purity criteria as set out in Commission Directive 95/45/EC (E 104)".
